Issuance of Electronic Emergency Travel Document (ETD) to return to Sri Lanka

 Machine-Readable Emergency Certificates /Travel Documents (ETDs) is introduced while discontinuing the Non-Machine-Readable Passports (NMRPs) with effect from 01 May 2026.

The Machine-Readable Emergency Travel Documents (ETDs), are issued to a Sri Lankan national who is legally residing in the United Arab Emirates and wishes to return to    Sri Lanka voluntarily for an emergency but does not have access to a valid Sri Lankan passport due to one of the following reasons;

  • The passport has expired
  • The passport is damaged
  • The passport has been lost or stolen
  • All pages of the passport has been fully utilized

The validity of the ETD is for 06 months and used exclusively for a single journey for the purpose of returning to Sri Lanka.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

  • Duly filled passport application-I.E.35_A K Form
  • Three colour photographs-taken within three months- passport size 3.5 cm x 4.5 cm
  • Current passport with copies of the bio data page, alterations, and observations page
  • A copy of the birth certificate (Sinhala / Tamil not the English translation)
  • A copy of the visa page
  • If the current passport is lost, apart from the above documents should submit a Police report for lost passport, with legal English translation.

  • If the original Sri Lankan passport is available (valid/expired)
