The Sri Lankan community in the United Arab Emirates celebrated the Sinhala and Tamil New Year at a traditional celebration held on Sunday, 30th April 2023 at the Embassy premises. The programme was organized by the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi- UAE in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Dhamma School.
The event was attended by a large gathering of children and Sri Lankan community members residing in Abu Dhabi, also present were the embassy staff members, sponsors and invitees. The event was lined up with traditional new year customs and games for the delight of the participants. Traditional New Year customs were depicted by the parents and teachers of the Abu Dhabi Dhamma school to create a sense of awareness and belonging among the younger generation.
The event started with the hoisting of the National flag and singing of the National anthem. Upon the following rituals, the New Year Kavili table with Milk-rice and Sri Lankan sweets were served for the participants.
Speaking at the occasion Ambassador Udaya Indrarathna highlighted the importance and significance of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebrations, and how such traditions promote the rich diversity and harmony among all Sri Lankans..
Traditional New Year Games such as breaking the pot, fancy dress, placing the elephant’s eye, bursting the balloon, tug of war and lime on spoon race were conducted for children and gifts were given to winners and children who participated at the event.
In the background of the event a medical camp also conducted by Al Ahaliya Hospital, Abu Dhabi, with the participation of a pediatrician and a GP doctor.
